Orlando to Los Angeles Good Sam Trip Planner

Hello All, I'm going to the Orlando area to pick up a motorhome I purchased and I am driving it cross country back to Southern California. I am using the Good Sam trip planner and it is telling me to take the 10 most of the way. Where I'm getting confused is around Houston it is telling me to take the 45 towards Dallas then take the 20 until it joins the 10 again. Can anyone tell me why it is telling me to get off the 10 to go around Houston and San Antonio? Is it just traffic? Construction? Trying to save me 15 minutes on a 36 hour drive? Thanks

There is a section of the interstate before Lafayette.. there is a name for the area.. .will give your dentures toothaches.

Also, with the last hurricane going through there, I would want to check the road condtions and another one headed that way.

At the risk of being disrespectful to our Good Sam hosts, I personally wouldn't rely on the trip planner for navigation advice. Between the free Apple Maps app, Google Maps, and Waze, you have some pretty good tech available in your smartphone with a lot more expertise.

We always take detour around Phoenix. Going east-I 10 to Buckeye, Az.-85 to Gila Bend-I 8 to I 10. Really easy, relaxing drive. Our daughter and family live in Vail, Az. S. of Tucson. If you need cheap place to overnight in that area-Good Sam-Pima County Fairground Rv Park just off I 10 and we always stay overnight in Quartzsite, Az at-Good Sam-Holiday Palms.
Pima County Fairgrounds might not be a good stop. The exit at Houghton Rd. is under construction (construction of a 6 lane bridge) and the westbound off-ramp is closed as is the eastbound on-ramp. The next off-ramp is Rita Rd and it is closed southbound for bridge repairs. Only good route is to get off at Rita and go north through the neighborhood and loop around to south-bound Houghton to cross I-10 ta gain access to the fairgrounds.

Also, you can now bypass most of Phoenix by taking the 202 Loop west at the casino and it ties into I-10 well west of downtown Phoenix.

I have done that trip both ways a few times but itโ€™s been awhile. I by pass both Phoenix and part of El Paso. Also Big Easy.

Bought our first RV from a couple in suburban San Diego. And yes, drove from Central Fl to Poway to pick it up and bring it home. Excellent adventure there and back.

Check "Waze". It has real time traffic and up to date construction.

Being fairly familiar with most of that route, except the westernmost stretch of I-10 from Phoenix to LA, I would not take the I-45 to I-20 diversion and can't imagine why it is being recommended.
You may wish to consider looping to the north around San Antonio using TX-1604. You can also loop north around El Paso using TX-375 unless you are inexperienced in driving motorhomes. 375 does cross the Franklin Mountains north of El Paso.
I agree with taking I-12 on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain rather than going on I-10 through New Orleans.

Plugged it into Google Maps and it says to use I-10 the whole way...and it's about 2hr shorter, so unless there is some really bad construction on that route(Google Maps actually checks for this, so unlikely0, I doubt you would be better jumping up to I-20.
