The phone I have is an unlocked phone. At home in Bermuda a Bermuda provider sym card goes in. While in the US a Straight Talk sym card goes in.
Looking at coverage maps it appears that either Telus or Bell have the best service. Not needing much data either. Not a gamer, a movie watcher or one to be posting pictures of every moment of my day. Not much of a phone yapper either.
Data needs are CG research, since we rarely make reservations days in advance, & a few forums such as this one.

I have Verizon unlimited service so I can use my phone in US and Canada. No switching of any kind. Personally I will NEVER have anything to do with AT&T after the ripoff I got when they installed my worthless satellite TV service.

Check out Lucky Mobile. They say they are the Canadian cheapo brand, and you can buy refill cards at several retailers including dollar stores. They are a Bell subsidiary, so coverage is good in Newfoundland. Just remember that the population of NL isn't big, so there are places where there is no cell coverage!
Our phones are with a Rogers subsidiary and we quite frequently were roaming at no charge when we went to Newfoundland in 2019.
