I once had a Shell credit card and my local station was on my block. When I was laid off from my job, I wrote a letter to Shell, saying I wanted to keep the card, and I would pay something every month without fail. My card was cancelled and I was in collection status in three days.

In 2006, I had an LL Bean Visa, to get free shipping when purchasing from LL Bean. I found a shirt on sale for 1/2 price ($16). The bill either got thrown out, or lost in the mail, and I forgot I’d bought the shirt. The next bill had a late for of $29, plus interest on $16. It was totally my fault for not paying it on time. After that I closed all my CC accounts, and carry 2 debit cards on different banks.
CC companies don’t have those big fancy buildings, and run all these adds on TV because they give money away on cash back. I know if you are perfect and stay on top of things, you can get a bit back. For me it is not worth the hassle, or risk. The debit cards have the same protection as a CC. In the last $15 years, I’ve used them for rental cars, hotels, airlines, and never had an issue.
Different people like to do things differently. I like the ease of using my debit card, and paying for things once and not having to worry. When choosing a gas station when traveling, i notice the price differences from state to state, out of curiosity. When it is time to fill up i look at ease of getting in and out of the station, not at gas prices. If one station is $0.05 cheaper, and they are packed, and there is a less crowded station with a light to make it easy to get in and out, I’ll pay the extra $3 to fill up.

No one uses gas buddy?
https://www.gasbuddy.com/gasback
They say up to $.25 per gallon but it's usually around $.03 to $.04. This is at just about any gas station, so you're not locked into one brand.
Not saying it's the best but I have had a good experience with it so far.

I know that I get 5% cash back every month with my Pen Fed Visa card - Thats $0.10/gal at $2.00/gal and prices are higher than that here. So the savings rate increases with price while the fixed rate/gal not so much.
Virtually every fuel station takes Visa.
But yes I use Gas Buddy to find stations and check prices.

With any credit card, it is all about US as consumers managing the credit card, not letting it control US.
With any good credit card, one can go into SETTINGS and then ALERTS and set up whatever they offer in the way of alerts. A text message or email with every purchase, same for any purchases over a certain amount or international charges, a text message or email with a reminder of your payment due date (I have mine set for 10 days before the due date), and a host of other alerts. One can also set up automatic payments of either the minimum payment due (to avoid late charges) or pay in full balance. One can also pay weekly if you'd prefer, or however frequently you'd like. The point is to pay off the credit cards in full before any interest is added. There are exceptions but that's not for this discussion.

Not worth a few cents a gallon when you are towing something like this. Fuel at Major Truck stops with no issues. That's well worth a few cents per gallon IMHO!
