Gmail Reverted to Portuguese

Suddenly, for no reason, my Gmail accounts reverted to Portuguese. Although I can easily revert it back to English during the session, next time I go to my Gmail, it's back to Portuguese again. IIRC, I believe I've also seen it revert to some oriental language in the past. None of my other email clients exhibit this behavior (Yahoo, icloud, Protonmail). Any ideas what could be causing this? Might it be some sort of malware? Thanks.

EDIT: Disregard. Problem may have resolved itself. :h

How is GMail working now? Or have you learned Portuguese well enough to read your email? :B

I'd check the location of your VPN server to find out if it's located in Portugal? As some have mentioned, it could be that GMail is setting the default language to where it detects the location of the VPN?

Out of curiosity, the next time your GMail is in Portuguese, go check the location of your VPN IP at WhatIsMyIP.com.

You can also change your GMail language from settings.

The only Portuguese I know is "bom Dia" (good day). Gmail is OK now. Proton free VPN only uses USA servers, to the best of my knowledge. So far, I'm pleased with it. I also have Windscribe VPN as backup.

That would be my first item to do or check if not already done so.

Hi Ed! Good on you for using Proton VPN. I have used their email since they were in beta and love their privacy policy. Do you use them for mail too?

As to VPN usage, does Proton VPN allow you to force select your country you are routing thru? That could fix any language/measurement unit problems that arise (if your prob is indeed caused by that). I use Nord VPN and often country-surf just for the heck of it.

I am just going by stated policy re Google, Facebook, and the rest who actually come out and say that they harvest and sell private info. I have no prob with anyone who wants to do that, just that everyone knows what they are doing. Someone once said that if you cant figure out who is paying for a service, then the answer is that You Are. Google/FB/et al get a lot of money selling targeted advertising.

Yes, Mike, I use free Proton VPN plus proton mail. I like using free services, although I realize there may be some risk. I previously used Tunnelbear VPN (paid) and found it satisfactory. I also realize Nord VPN, as well as Express VPN, are highly rated. Glad you're using Nord.
I'm not interested in surfing through other countries, though. USA is good enough for me.

Agree with all re de-googleing (and de-Anythinging that sells your personal data. all you gmailers are aware that google reads and harvests info in all your gmails, right?).

Yes, Mike, I usually use Proton VPN, so I agree with your assessment. I wish to continue with the VPN since I usually use an unsecured hotel WIFI where I'm living. The language problem hasn't reappeared in several days, so I'll take a wait and see approach for now. The VPN has caused no other issues I'm aware of and I feel safer using it. Malware scans have also turned up no issues.

Additionally, what guarantee do we have that other email clients don't also harvest personal information? That's a chance we all take, regardless of what email service we're using.;) Perhaps a paid service may be a better bet?

Good point, Tom. I've already de-Googlefied to some extent, not using Chrome browser or search engine, for example. If there are continued problems with Gmail, I'll no doubt do the same. ๐Ÿ™‚

If I'm in Portugal, why is everyone around me speaking English? :B

I visited Spain and Portugal many years ago, but wasn't online at that time. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyhow, problem has resolved for now. If it persists, I'll take further action. I wonder if there's a way to "re-install" a Gmail account without losing my current address?

And with your computer's very good tracking system, my unsolicited advice is not to visit any porn site.:B

Reverted to Portuguese? Was it set that way before? Did you check the settings. And restart the browser aand if that doesn't work use the frequent cure, a reboot.
