I have read somewhere that 1 tons trucks are classified different in some states causing tag rates to be higher. Anyone have info on this?

A privately owned, privately used one ton should not have to comply with the same regulations that an over the road semi does, but unfortunately the laws have been misused to that effect. At the last renewal for my Ram 1 ton dually, they asked me if it is used for commercial, I said no, they gave me this new plate that states non-commercial. Hopefully it keeps the highway nazis away.

Yes, but you mostly you only have to worry about your state.

In CA all commercial vehicles have obligation to drive via DOT scales.
Some scales have "no pickups" sign, so if you are less than 11,000 GVWR you can bypass it.

My 1/2 ton is Commercial in New York.

Since I got my original license plate in 1994, they've changed the law so now anything that is <6300lbs empty and isn't used commercially can get "car" plates, I just haven't felt the need to waste my time changing the registration. The difference in cost is not that much.

Technically I can't drive my 1/2 ton pickup on parkways (NO COMMERCIAL VEHICLES), but I have driven both the Lake Ontario State Parkway, and the Taconic State Parkway, but the highway patrol has never bothered me.

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

Yes, some states classify as commercial, once again don't rely on forum advice, contact your local DMV, and get the information straight from them. In Oregon I pay the same for our 2016 Ram 3500 DRW, as we did for our 2005 PT Cruiser Rag Top.

All pickups w/o a camper permanently mounted are issued commercial plates in CA.

My e350 van had commercial plates when I bought it used so I had DMV change the title over to passenger plates. Saved me 50% on the annual registration fee.

My 3/4 ton was classified commercial in FL up until I traded it in 2019.
