So here is the way I look at it.
My Dad was a truck driver, and i drove with him for a while.. But after I stopped. he came by the house one day while we were gone, and left some of that good Texas produce on the steps.
I called him when we got home and saw it. He told me he had to go out on a trip, and we would get together and do whatever when he got back.
Well he came back in a box. He died in a rest area in Nebraska. Not from an accident. He truly was the best driver you could ever meet. Had 20 save driving awards. So when I say I learned from the best. I really did. He died from a ruptured hernia.
Now every since that day. If my kids wanted to do something, or my wife wanted to do some thing. IF I could I made it happen. We bought a TT because we could go places and camp, we never could afford to go and stay in a motel. And yes , we struggled to pay for the TT as well. but it gave us the freedom to do things we wanted to do.
My point is. I decided we would live. We would do the things we wanted to do. We may not have been able to go first class all the time. But we lived, and are living. Now because of it. I may not have a lot of money saved up, and there are times we still struggle because of how we lived. But the key word in. We live. and i wouldn't trade all the money in the world for the memories we made in those "entry level" popups, and TTs. Because you know what. You may not be here in the morning, and money ain't worth nothing unless you spend it. It's only paper. It won't keep you warm at night, and it won't sit beside you going down the road. And it won't talk to you about the adventures you had, or sadly. Didn't have.
So live dude. You might not be here in the morning either. and all that worrying you do over money won't mean a thing.
Except of course to Mama and her new traveling companion.

as a long dead friend of mine once said. There will come a time in your life when all you can do is sit on the porch. Don't be the guy sitting there saying I wish I had done this or that. Be the guy sitting there telling anyone within earshot the tales of all your adventures. I was 19 at the time and he was in his mid 50s. I am following his advice. My friend never made it to the front porch. He was in his 90s and had been fly fishing the Bitteroot River with a friend, He dropped dead on the trail walking back to the car with 4 nice trout in his creel.

Some true stories here...
I sometimes have to check myself because we’re very fortunate to live a good life and finances aren’t an issue at all (within reason).
However I grew up a bit more meagerly than that. And learned great lessons from my parents about how to spend wisely and how to stretch a dollar. And with those limitations they did everything they could for me and my sister. We got to do all the big “trips”. Drove all over the country several summers. But our RV was a 6man tent and a camp stove in a turtle topper on top of a not so new Buick!
And they also, as soon as we left the house, started living even more. Took more trips, went to Europe. Bought a little cabin up north etc.
it was good to see because they sacrificed a lot prior imo.
Ending with getting ready to retire, I built them a log home on the property next to the cabin. It was their dream. Well dad made it until I’d almost finished the house and passed away at 59. Mom made it another 10 mostly enjoyable years living back in the woods on a lake.
Good thing they did what they could when they could. And probably should have done more, because they didn’t get that many years. Hell, dad never even actually retired. Just got too sick to work and couldn’t help me build the house, which was one of his dreams as he always wanted to be a carpenter. (He was a pretty good carpenter, but a meat cutter by trade and was proud of the fact I learned how to do that at an early age. I Paid my way through college pounding nails)
Mom Still had plenty of money before she passed. And for what? My sister stole most of it when mom was sick right before she died. And then pissed away her part of the house that I set up for her. And most of what I kept was spent on my sisters problems too, which in the end have proven to be a waste. They may as well had spent it all because most of it got squandered.

Now here we are. 2 kids, one off to college next year and one in high school.
Wife has been battling heart problems for the last dozen years. (I don’t ever really tell people this). Like as many surgeries as the number of years.
So on one hand, I try to be frugal and follow in my parent’s footsteps and it has helped us be as financially solvent as we are, but on the other, we’re doing everything we can for our kids while still making them understand money don’t grow on trees.
Toughest part is my career is long hours. Always has been and always will be.
Not ideal, but it pays the ,now, millions in medical bills with great insurance and enough salary that we can live good off of just my income.
If not for my sisters bullchit and the wife’s health, we could have retired easily here when the younger boy graduates high school. With the big 5 0 coming up next year woulda been sweet. But instead we got a bigger camper so we can live it up!
No one knows your situation and you haven’t shared it. But there are ways to get done what you what to get done. So do it

I am not telling you to wait to to live, take trips and live but if you want a certain truck and camper, wait to get what you want. Travel and stay in hotel/motels, campground cabins, etc.

Totally. That was my point as well. You can achieve the vast majority of your goal without your “forever” or “dream” setup if $ is a concern (like it is for most all of us, right?).

It's great to have something you love doing so much that it keeps you off the couch and moving when old. An investment in yourself as I see it.
It has been wonderful for me, but please, if you find yourself being a bit impulsive about buying you should back away for 24 hours as many problems can be overlooked when your like that. The more you look and stay reserved, objective the more you'll ultimatly know when the right one is in front of you. You'll get smarter the more you keep looking.
