Thinking of do a trip to Rhode Island this summer. Will likley hit high spots of Provedence and Newport. Are there any other things to see that might be off the "beaten path"? Any campground suggestions?

Look at www.allstays.com for campgrounds. You can search by state or area, type, hookups, and price. You can search state parks, NPS, private parks independently if you choose it. It also states number of sites and contact info, and reviews.

You should at least go down to Watch Hill and see the Flying Horse Carousel. It is the oldest continuously operating carousel in the country. If you see the postcard with a mother and her carriage, a boy, a girl and a dog. That's me in the carriage.

With the short notice may be difficult to find a place, I hear this place is not to bad.

We've been to both Fishermen's Memorial & Mystic KOA, both decent camping spots (preference to FMSP, though). Ditto on the suggestions to visit Mystic Seaport & the Submarine Museum!
I don't know if he's still a working judge, but if you get a chance to attend a court session in Providence where Judge Frank Caprio is presiding, do it. (Visitors are apparently allowed - or at least were before Covid.) He is remarkable, so much so that a TV show was made of segments of his court sessions. We've enjoyed the show.

Mystic Seaport isn't too far away. It's in Connecticut. It's a restored whaling village, and the last time I was there (about 15 years ago) it was excellent. History.

When we were camped at Fisherman's Memorial we stumbled into an opportunity to get on a ferry boat tour to Block Island. It was a fund-raiser or something, and it was a half-day cruise that included a meal and some time on the island, as well as a complete boat ride to and around the island and then back to port. Lots of fun.

Of course Newport, but you already mentioned that.

Try booking Fishermen's Memorial State Park and Campground, down the road is the beaches in Narragansett. If you bring bikes, you can bike down the road to the ferry and take it over to scenic Block Island and bike the island, lots of touristy shops and restaurants to get a bite to eat. From the campground is easy Day trips to Newport Mansions and Mystic Seaport CT, about 40 minutes away. Check out USS NAUTILUS museum in New London, CT

You can also drive & park at the ferry and rent bikes or Scooters at Block Island.

Look at Old Sturbridge Village - very interesting recreation of historic 1800's town. Worth an entire day trip, and is north of Providence in Massachusetts.

While in and around Providence, stop by Olneyville. Go to the New York System wiener stand in Olneyville, you won't regret it. It's been a fami!y tradition for over 70 years, almost their whole existence. Dad would go their after a few beers back in the day and long before "Guy Fieri" visited on Diners, Drive it's and Dives!!!
