Sylvan Lake Campground to Mt Rushmore

Sylvan Lake campground in Custer State Park to Mount Rushmore in a 26’ Class C. I was told it was better to avoid Hwy 87 from the campground to 244 and go around thru the town of Custer up 385 then over 244 to the monument.
Any ideas about this?

Those tour bus drivers are trained especially for those tunnels. Google for videos ... it's a tight fit.

I grew up in Custer and used to be pretty familiar with the area.

Tour buses go through those tunnels every day. Are you wider and/or taller than a tour bus?

If you are in doubt about Highway 87, I would take Highway 89 to Custer and then take 385 to 244 to Rushmore. It is 10 miles further and 15 minutesw longer, but no tunnels.

According to the Custer SP map I found for your other question, 87 in both directions has tunnels (with listed sizes).

To Custer then north to 244 via 385.

Unless you want some switch backs and a low narrow tunnel, the Hood tunnel 8' 9" wide 9' 8" tall. Look up the route on Google Maps
