Power lines have nothing to do with the photo. And there was no toad in their camp.

I bet it's just for kayak storage while at the site, and when en route the kayak is elsewhere (such as strapped to the roof of the toad). Assuming that's the case, it actually looks pretty decent to me, assuming you don't have a campsite with lots of tree cover.

Assuming the roof is around 11ft...only 15-16ft to the tip of the kayak.

As long as he's happy getting under 95% of bridges. :S
