My brother and I would leap from the carpet and stand like sentinels alongside the glowing round picture tube that even had an image of a Sioux chieftain in the lower right hand corner.

Wanderer, what time of day did the test pattern disappear and the first show commence (in black and white, of course)? What was the first show you saw?
Here in the state of SC, the pattern didn't leave until 3:00 p.m. (just about the time I came home from school). The first program I saw was the "Lone Ranger."

What I remember is after the 15 minuet local news cast at 11pm they played the national anthem with a flag flying, then a test pattern until either 6 or 7am the next morning..
As to first shows, do you remember "Captain Video & his Video Rangers".
It was about space travel that came on at 7pm an was only a 15 minuet show and there was a robot named "Tobor" which is robot spelled backward... It was on in the early 50's...

I remember when Walter ended his show with That's the way it is, And you believed him. My local news guy (Hugh Mortimer) went to the same school as Walter it seemed cause you had a tendency to believe him too. Today.. Not so much.
And in my parent's house the television had a Remote...... ME.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

after a semi "nicked" it. Still have the radios

As a teenager, I had a summer job with a radio/TV tower maintenance company. During the day, we could paint the lower 3/4 of the tower, but then we had to wait until the transmitter shutdown, typically at midnight, to paint the top and change the aircraft obstruction warning light bulbs. I well remember standing around outside the transmitter shacks watching through a window for the test pattern on a monitor to go to snow so we could start climbing.

I remember Winky Dink, Arthur Godfrey, and when I was about twelve after the National Anthem, Static.
Later on the first show on Saturday was Industry On Parade and year around the producers seem to use Christmas music as a background.
Stores sold "color tv" tinted transparent film. Slap it on the screen. Bottom shaded pink, middle third green and top third blue. It worked best with Westerns
60 years ago there was the Chet Huntley David Brinkly News.
I have forgotten when I first viewed a Motion Picture on television. But the very first thing I remember was a cartoon with no speech just music. Depicting Africa. A cartoon small child following a black bird. Every so often the bird would hop. I was around 4 at the time.

If this graphics popped up while watching your favorite show you knew TV was over for the night. Only one station in town and it could be down for a few days sometimes.

Growing up in Los Anchorage, it was always a special treat to go with the parents to Seattle for a trip. Not only was it cool to travel ("Look, this has 4! propellers"), but back in those days of taped shows, one would see all the shows in Seattle, fly back to Anchorage a few days later, just in time to see the same episodes.
The signal graphic, the flag waving in the breeze, and the ubiquitous white static or repeating dots / "off air" were all a staple of television in those early days.
