The canal is open for skating the full distance, 7.8 Km
Mind you it's -28C wind chill today with a stiff north wind. Going down too -41C overnight.... NO thanks.

Sounds like fun!
When I was a kid I used to skate the Medley Creek from CFB Cold Lake all the way to Cold Lake in minus 30's plus the wind chill.
Yeah, ok, I was younger.... But it was fun!

When I was a bit younger, well about 50 years ago, a local conservation would flood the walking hiking trails for skating. Another city would convert the sidewalks in the central park for skating. It was nice exercise and scenic skating in the woods or outdoor parks.
Cold, all relative. I looked out my window this afternoon, a man jogging by wearing a sweat shirt and shorts, it was only -18 Celsius (~0 F)

And just for those that may not realize it: -40°C is also -40°F, the only temperature where Fahrenheit and Centigrade are equal!

Was up at Algonquin last week camping for the week. They had their skating rink open too. Only got down as low as -20C while skating. If I was up there today it's -28C and sunny as well I find that a little to cold to last too long out on the ice these days.

After having spent too much time during the warm months in various southern locations, I can tell you sir, the same goes for a low country swamp in July!!
I can always put another layer on, or move a little more to stay warm. Staying cooler is a whole ‘nuther matter!!

Actually, Tri-Cities WA is about 150 miles NORTH of Toronto.
If you take the same latitude as Toronto and go out to the west coast you end up a little south of Eugene OR.
