We just did a short trip south from McAllen, Texas to Guatemala and return. There are several improvements on the Mexico Gulf Coast Route eliminating going through several smaller towns. Starting in the state of Veracruz...south of Tampico save a couple of hours and lots of topes bypass north of Cerro Azul...go direct to Tuxpam or Veracruz.

Also the free road from Arriaga to Tapachula is in good condition. Use the El Carmen border crossing to Guatemala not the Tecun Uman....which is for commercial traffic.

New bypass is open in Veracruz state south of Tampico new shortcut open to Tuxpan, safe going through a lot of small towns and a lot of speed bumps cost for a dual wheel RV is about $40
Construction almost done on a new direct Veracruz Tampico bypass should be done sometime before the end of the year
