I might have worded it a bit differently than the OP, but (I think I'm with Crowe on this), if I told someone that I'd contact them at some point (i.e. back in town), I'd feel like that was a commitment not to sell until that contact was made.

This means you have made arrangements with them and you are willing to wait the 4 hours. If I were him and you tell me it's sold after I arrive lets just say it ain't gonna be a pretty picture!!!

I've experienced just that and the buyer/looker wasn't in any hurry to come. So what would you do then, continue to wait for them to make up their mind when to come? Reading the original question he did contact the out of town buyer/looker who maybe could have come sooner but didn't. Why not? Unless he told the man he'd hold it until he got there or he knows for sure the guy is on his way I don't see where people figure he owes the guy the right to first refusal. Also the guy should have known his wife wouldn't approve of the door location before driving 4 hrs one way. Lookyloos are a dime a dozen which so far is all the seller has had. Some have mention about keeping your word I didn't read anything that said the seller led anyone on or made any promises

Cash in hand. When I first started selling stuff on our local Marketplace apps I can't tell you how many times people would say "I'll be there at 5 PM to get it" and then never show. Meanwhile I've turned other people away. And now if I go back to those other people I've lost my bargaining position to some extent because they know my other buyer didn't pan out. Now I do everything it's not sold until you pay me for it and I make everyone aware that this is how I do it.

It's situational. If I'm going to invest time and money to drive a distance to buy, I'm not going to bother if it may disappear before I get there. You may be alienating buyers with your method.
If you get a commitment for someone to show by a certain time, simply tell the other buyers that after that time it's all theirs. No reason to "turn them away", just inform them someone else is tentative. If that causes them to give up they weren't serious buyers.

Reminds me of selling my sister's POS vehicle. I think it burned more oil than gas.
It was a private buyer vs a reseller. They both knew about each other. Both had some story of delay but arrived within a few minutes of each other. Nearly got into a fist fight with each other, very sad. Private buyer relented to pay a few hundred more and it was settled. I still gave him the original price as the car was not even worth the asking. Felt bad for him that he "won". Was just glad it was over.

Whoever has the money gets it.
Just call the one that may be on the way so they don’t get all the way ther only to find out it was sold as they were driving, if it works out that way!

We also had a situation many years ago with the sale of a pickup truck. Potential buyer showed first thing in morning. Didn't purchase since looking at other possibilities. Second potential buyer showed up later in day. While he was out driving the vehicle, the first buyer showed back up unannounced and wanted to purchase. When the second buyer came back with the truck, he wanted to think about it, until we told him we had another buyer present. The second potential buyer was forced to make a decision on the spot, taking several long minutes to make the decision to buy--for full price of course although joking asked if we would take less. He thought it was a setup. Felt sorry for the first potential buyer who spent all day looking for vehicles, ending up with nothing at the end of the day, but that's the way it goes.

Had a similar issue on the last motorcycle I sold. Buyer 1 called very interested lived a few hours away it was thursday night and wanted to look at it sat am. I agreed. later had more calls, my response was your X in line, have someone coming to look at it Sat AM, if they don't buy I'm going down the line. First person looked at it, I told him the situation, make a decision this AM, or I go down the line. he bought it, called the others and said "sorry it's sold".

Yeah, but to be fair...KTMs sell themselves, don't they?
