For advice, PLEASE tell us what Allison transmission you have or better yet, fill out your signature so we know what you have (year, coach, engine, trans info really help with accurate answers).

Allison 6 speed 3000 series electronic transmission or Mechanical 4 speed.

Both were used with the Cummins B engine, as were some 5 speed 1000 and 2000 series.

If 6 speed, 3000 series transmission (like MD3060) 4th is direct, 5th and 6th are OD's. There will be a plate on the driver's side of the transmission with model and serial number-- good to have when ordering parts/filters as there are both shallow and deep pans.

Torque converter is locked in "high 2nd" and all higher gears. The lock up in second is at higher engine speed and feels like a mini-shift.

Servicing is pretty straightforward. Get the filter kit from an Allison dealer. It has filters, gaskets and instructions. Not a difficult job.

Then get a 5 gallon pail from the Allison dealer of Transynd 668 (the newest fluid that replaces earlier fluids).

If you don't know when the transmission was last serviced, do it now.
Then you will have a base line for future maintenance.
It's cheap insurance.

My 1994 six speed Allison still runs without any issues. When I first got this rig, I had the trans fluid tested and then replaced the Transynd and filters. The test gives you a good indication of the condition of the trans. I have changed it once more since then.

Get the fluid tested annually....JG Lubrication. I've been using them for 11 years, get a detailed report back within a week:
