Leaving Cloudcroft going west, there is a sign that says, "Trucks over 11 tons without retarder brakes prohibited on US 82 west of Cloudcroft." There's a reason - 16 miles of 6% with some 7% thrown in for good measure. There are two runaway truck ramps spaced fairly far apart. Be careful in a gasser with a tow'd.

Basic two lane, almost no shoulder, road through high scrub desert, oil fields and then mountain pine forest, before dropping down to high desert again, in the last 15 miles.

We made that ride on 2011 with our 40 MH puling a Jeep Liberty. You can read my write-up of that trip on our blog. As long as you keep your speed down coming down from Cloudcroft, you shouldn't have any trouble.
