2015 Cummins Turbo Actuator

I just got a letter from FCA advising that they are extending the warranty on my turbo actuator to 15 years and 150k miles. How common is this problem and how expensive of a fix is it out of warranty?

I'd heard a little bit about it but I'm guessing it may be more widespread than I was thinking if they're extending the warranty coverage.

Never heard anything special about 2015's on the TDR.

Me neither, and it seems to be an issue across multiple years and same part number for several years afaik.
But for a mfg to offer extended warranty I’m sure it has to meet a certain criteria of number of failures. And economically speaking, they wouldn’t issue an extension until that criteria is exceeded.
Not unlike the old Dmax injector warranty extensions. Started with early models and then progressed to later models, presumably as those proved to have a certain failure % as well.

Of little consequence to me unless my “good” dealer would warranty it given that it is not affected by my modifications. But I didn’t expect any warranty coverage on anything powertrain when I bought the truck since the bed was full of shiny new takeoff parts and the tailpipe was black and smells like a diesel!

This extended warranty so far has only applies to 2015 models. Mine was replaced under warranty last year. Mine is a 2015 so I have another 56k or 8 years left on my newly extended warranty.

Yes it's a fairly common problem. There is a form on the back side of your letter that a person can fill out if they had paid out of pocket for an actuator replacement.

Nice FCA is extending warranty on these and paying if a person already paid out of pocket.

New actuators are $500-800 and most require a dealer software calibration/flash. City Diesel offers a new, not reman (as I understand it) VGT actuator that is plug n play.
Replacement is fairly simple theoretically. About twice the time on a non deleted truck to get the EGR stuff disassemble to get to it. Other issue is the bolts are commonly very corroded. Mine looks horrible and it's basically never seen a real winter.
I hear about it all the time on the Cummins forum, but idk real numbers, % gone bad at how many miles.
Sitting at almost 100k miles on our truck now and so far so good...
