This all is just so sad and unnecessary. I really feel for the family during their grief and mourning.
Some months ago I posted on another forum about elderly parents and not wanting them to get killed making foolish decisions. And this outcome is why.
May he rest in peace and may she recover and be comforted in the arms of her family.

A sad story. Perhaps the thing that we should come away with to reinforce the maxim that you never, never go down any road unless you already know that you will be able to turn around or get through. Even a two-lane road may not allow for turning around. A single-lane road is definitely a red flag.
We routinely apply this caution before entering a shopping mall or fuel station, where a bad result is likely to be a temporary inconvenience. Let us not forget to apply it when a bad result is certainly going to be costly and could be lethal.

That is a sad tale, indeed. And to be sure, as marvelous as GPS devices are, there are limits to their helpfulness requiring discretion. For starters, if the road looks suspicious, don't take it, no matter how insistent that little box gets.

We just returned from a trip to Arizona and Utah. Our Garmin wanted us to take a two track dirt road to get to our next destination. On the GPS it looked like a good way to save about one hundred miles of driving. When I saw what the "road" looked like, I informed the wife that I would not drive on it unless I have my UTV with extra winch cable.

Great road for a short 4WD. Not so much for a long and low RV.

All of the people here blaming the GPS conveniently overlook the fact that the couple was using printed maps, not GPS.

Yeah, scanning thru the video, I would have stopped long before they did regardless of what the GPS said.
While you don't like to speak ill of the dead, this sure comes across as they kept going long after it was obviously a bad idea.

^ True. And to that point, older folks, maybe not the boondocking type, bad with directions, easily confused, physical limitations, not mechanically or 4 wheelin saavy, terrain that all looks the same, etc, can lead to a bad situation. And unfortunately it did.
However, remember, I don't think the feller passed away because they were lost, did he? (maybe he ran out of medication or...)
This story is different if the people involved were healthy. It goes from tragedy to a good story next year around the campfire...
