The shift pad stays on number 6 front the start I seems to be shifting just fine. I was just wondering if it was in some Mode that keeps it there?

If you have an Allison transmission, the pad has two numbers. The one on the left is the gear it is heading to and the number on the right is the gear you are currently in. The mode button can have different uses on different transmissions. My mode button makes mine shift up at a lower rpm.

Some Allison pads only have one number, and it sounds like yours is one of them.

Yes, let us know if you have the one window shift pad or two.
ASSUMING it is a one window, 6 is exactly the same as "D" in your car. It is the gear toward which the transmission will shift as you accelerate.
The mode button is entirely separate and changes when the transmission will shift up/down at higher throttle positions.
