The one on the left is the gear it is heading to and the number on the right is the gear you are currently in. The mode button can have different uses on different transmissions. My mode button makes mine shift up at a lower rpm. ASSUMING it is a one window, 6 is exactly the same as "D" in your car. It is the gear toward which the transmission will shift as you accelerate. The mode button is entirely separate and changes when the transmission will shift up/down at higher throttle positions.
