We just returned from a 4 day/3 night trip to the North Rim staying at the Jacob Lake USFS CG.
The CG has 51 sites and sits at the top of the grade at 7.900' on the {very} scenic stretch of Highway 89A south west of Page Arizona.
From the junction of highway 67 and 89A it is 47 miles due south to the North Rim. We planned to ride our Can Am Spyder down to the National Park and explore the area for a couple of days before returning home but the remnants of tropical Storm Kay had other plans. We got a great ride in on Monday morning but had to scurry back to camp to beat the incoming thunderstorms which unfortunately lasted through Wednesday morning and our return home.
Jacob Lake has Vault toilets, fire rings and concrete tables. They provide drinking water {but not for filling RV's}. The entire CG is gravel and the hosts do an excellent job of keeping up all of the facilities. Sites are $24 a night and $12 with our Geezer card and weekends reservations are recommended.
It officially closes on 10/15 or the first serious snowfall which ever comes first {put your money on the snow}. We have stayed here half a dozen times as it makes for a great overnight stop when we would travel to Zion, Bryce Canyon or Capitol Reel NP's.

Good to know about the water as we are toying with the idea of the North Rim next year. Guess I'll make sure to fill before hand.

Inside the Grand Canyon Park N Rim there are several camping sites. Mostly w/o facilites except for the N Rim CG near the N Rim lodge. Check for recent changes.

Stayed there 4 years ago for one night when the GCNR was full to the brim in September. Never even considered making a reservation at GC, as we never had before. Times have changed. We had just left Bryce Canyon and stopped by Duck Creek Village for a look around, then south to GCNR, thinking "no problem, they're probably getting ready to shut down". WRONG.
We were in site #8 at Jacob's Lake. Nice little campground and a great alternative to GC. There was a young couple that arrived late in the day, just as it started to rain, and they were in a small car, doing the tent camping thing. It rained all night long.
They survived. As did we.

If you don't mind a little off road (almost) drive down some less than smooth USFS roads, there are a few canyon overlook camping spots east of the highway between Jacob Lake and GCNR. Check for specifics/details at any of the "free camping" websites. I'm not sure if a NPS annual pass is required to stay at these places, but it might be, as they are USFS, I think a part of the NPS family of locations? FR611 is supposed to be a good one. When in doubt, scout it out, first in a smaller 4X4 vehicle. We started down it, same trip, and decided it wasn't worth the risk after it got really rutted. We didn't have the Wrangler with us, so we passed.
There are also a smattering of commercial PPU campgrounds along the same roadway, west side, if you prefer something a little less "Bohemian".
