I'm wondering if the sales rep was pulling a semi fast one on you, in that, that is the tire he had in stock per say. Vs the real one you need that is a week out.
My daughter had this issue at Discount last Friday. The fellow tried to sell her a 205-65-16 for her Subaru Outback. OM states a 225-60 for summer or winter with no snow chain use. Or a 205-60 for winter chain use. The 205-65 was tall by 1/2" over her 225's. He had basic blizzack in the one size in stock. Nothing else
I looked at tire options, went that's a great Midwest dry snow tire. Horrible he wit it typically 31-33f and sticking snow. Cooper had a nice looking NW tire.
Went back yesterday, different person. Won't have the tires for a week, rims too. Pay by x date, you can't get the $100 rebate from Cooper, showed AAA card, got an additional $100 off. Along with correct 205-60 size, new rims for these tires. He'll mount/install in November. Less than $1000 including our city/states 10.5% salestax. She's a happy camper!

Back to tire issue, yes I think as noted, 3000 is probably an XL pmetric tire. Great for my 1500. DONT buy for an 8lug 25/35 series SW truck. An E rated tire should be in the 3500-4000 lb relm for the newest ie last 5-10 year versions of those trucks.
That XL tire would have worked on the older 8600-9900 SW 8 lug rigs, not today's.

You can get Kenda Klevar AT2 in that size for under $200. 3 peak snow rated, fairly aggressive pattern, but still have low road noise and a 50k mile warranty. The only downside I've seen is that the tread is big enough that it likes to pick up 57 stones from my driveway and stick in the tread until I get 1-2 houses down the road and then flying into the wheel well.

I see you got your tire situation covered. And it is amazing how many "tire salesmen" have no idea about what they sell. I had a blowout on the way to Delaware one year. Replaced it with the spare and got to the campground. Called the local tire place and they had one tire in the size and weight rating I needed. I drove over with the blowout one the rim and they changed it out. Before I left I asked him what pressure he had it set at. He said 60 lbs. I asked him to make it 80 lbs. The max cold psi on the sidewall. He said "It's no wonder you had a blowout. If you run them at 80 lbs they will blow out when the tire warms up above 80."
I told him to put 80 in it and the next time his tire manufacturer rep comes in, ask him about max cold tire pressure and what you should be inflating tires to.

I would take a hard pass on any Michelin tire.

Look for an E rated tire in another name brand. I had Generals on my Excursion and was very happy with them.

What happened with Michelin? On these forums they are usually considered one of the best brands.

Yeah - Michelins are our go to tire now - and we have been buying tires for a looooong time.

Ask for tire based on the Load Index (which correlates directly to the load rating).

The ABCD... is an old system based on how many nylon plies the tire is made from...except no one has made 10 ply tires for for pickups in years. With modern steel belted tires, they give you a rough approximation of the ply equivalent but the actual load rating will vary a surprising amount within the same ply rating. You don't really care about plies. You want to know the load rating (I'm a bit baffled why they went to Load Index rather than just listing the load rating but it's the more easily searched figure).

Look at the sticker on the door and calculate the minimum load rating for the tires based on the max axle rating:
- You should do if for both axles and pick the higher resulting per tire load.
- I would generally go a little higher on the rating but not drastically.
- I would also go with an LT tire over a P rated tire.

Honestly, better to research online and go in with the specific model and price.

I think this really came down to poor communication. Either he thought I didn't know what I was talking about or was trying to relay something that was important to him but butchered it up in his delivery. But they are really nice folks and great mechanics and have had them put tires on several other vehicles. He had the tires I wanted all along he just messed up the conversation about load rating. I did my research to confirm what I wanted and they have them cheaper than anyone else in town, they're close and do all our other maintenance, so it all works out. Just a very weird conversation. Going with the Michelin Defenders. Good luck with them and my wife currently runs them on her car, and they have a good warranty. I didn't really want an AT tire. We live in the South and I don't off road with my truck. I just need a good highway tire with the proper load rating. Still miffed that the OEM tires wore out so quickly.

Anyway, thanks again for the help.

Never had Michelins until my last truck 2007 3500 Chevy dually came with Michelins already installed.
I got 80K miles out of those tires and 80K on the next 2 sets of tires.
I'm sold on Michelin. For the record I only got 50K out of my OEM Michelins on my current truck.

Sounds like your tire guy may not deal much in truck tires. I would find a new guy that understands what you need.

For what its worth, I've been very happy with the price and quality of Goodyears. I bought some Wrangler SRA Silent Armor with Kevlar this spring. I wait for a Goodyear sale, then combine with their credit card offers ($200 off AND 0% financing for 6 months) and usually get a pretty good deal. Bought my 4 18" E rated tires for my Ram for about $1000 installed.
