What would cause severe wear to the rod at the connection end? Almost no wear on the rest of the rod. I use teflon tape on the threads. Two brand new rods, two years in a row.

Are the rods the same manufacturer and which manufacturer?
Something in the water or wrong anode material for that water.

My wear like that as well. I've always thought it's the area closest to the other metal source so it wears more there than the "free floating" end. Not sure I'm correct on that but it appears the anode is doing what it is suppose to do.

There are two different materials used for anodes, magnesium and aluminum.

Ours always erodes quickest nearest the threads, which I believe is the reason: closest connection. But just a guess.

yes, basic chemistry and electrolysis. I will corrode from the end closest to where it is attached to the tank and progress down towards the far end.

It's this rod. I'll just plan on buying a new one before camping season.

You may want to switch to an aluminum rod. Keep an eye on it to see if decays more evenly.
