Yeah I might avoid Mexico for the time being. Once the cartel violence started getting into the touristy areas I knew it was time to stop going. Unfortunate since there are some lovely areas there.

The ones who did this were rounded up, hog tied and dropped off at the border by the cartel.
They made a public statement. "We don't mess with touristas"

What is seldom mentioned is that an overwhelming majority of cases occur in remote barrios and fraccionamientos, far off tourist routes. Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, and Cd Juarez are hardly tourist meccas. Casasodantes are hardly targets.
Kino Bay, San Carlos, Baja California Sur, Mazatlan, Yucatan are plugged with American Rvers.
I suggest doing more research before arriving at a conclusion. I live here. And yes I'll avoid certain USA cities like the plague for exactly the same reasons. PS I navigate by wheelchair.
