If you’re only running 120V then your neutral needs to be the same size as your hot. As others have suggested, consider one more hot wire. For the incremental cost you get 2x the power available. Even if you still use a 30A breaker, many 50A RV’s would probably be fine with only 30A available per leg. Depending upon your wire size and number of conductors, you may have to increase the conduit size. Conduit calculator

Be sure to get wet rated wire with a W in the designator.

Don’t forget sweeps (gently curved conduit elbows) to get into and out of the ground plus an L-box if you need to get through an exterior house wall to get to the main panel.

Just for kicks, as I walked through my local Home Depot, I glanced at PVC conduit prices.....almost 9 bucks for 1/2" x 10' and about 12 bucks for 1" . Geez !!!

Given the likely material costs and work, if it was me I'd find a qualified electrician that does industrial wiring and have him come and do a calculation for wire run, and what conduit to use if you run underground.

Voltage Drop
Minimum Conductor Size
2.93%
3 AWG
250 feet

I would install for 50 amp. That would require 1 AWG

After this statement, you should definitely re-read my first reply and think real hard about it.

Consider running it in a PVC conduit so you can easily run new or different cables in the future

This^^^^

Make sure the conduit is large enough to carry wires large enough for a 50 amp service.

We did the same thing in the late 80's. We installed a PVC pipe larger than needed for a 30-amp hookup (I tend to think ahead. Not clairvoyant so had no idea that a 50-amp hookup would be coming down the pipe but I used a larger PVC than was needed just in case I might need the room...someday)

Years later we had a 50-amp RV so I wanted to add or change the 30-amp post to 50-amps. But I neglected to account for the weight of the gravel driveway. The pipe had collapsed under the weight and while the 30-amp hookup was working there was no way to add any wire to it. So we had to run a new pipe for the 50-amp hookup and now have two hookup posts next to the drive.

The moral of the story: Run whatever cables you think you need now, tomorrow and in a few years. If I was doing this today I'd do a uo-to-date RV post....15/20 amps, 30-amps and 50-amps.

The bulk of cost/effort is in digging the trench. Very little extra to put it in a conduit.

Of course, this assumes you put it deep enough. 4-6inches below a gravel surface is likely to fail if you are driving heavy trucks over the top. I do a lot of this for work and the failures are usually when the contractor skimped on depth.

2100 to hook it up?? After you do the work trenching and running the wire? OMG. I'm in the wrong business. No way you should pay that much for this. Granted, the wire will be your biggest expense in this. You buy all the material and save yourself from his markup. Does he think he has a fish on his line? Hooking it up will take him 20 minutes. You do it yourself and go to dinner with the money saved. SMH.
