I have issues with too many online products that reviewed well but were ridiculously faulty. Yes I belong to Consumer Reports.
I have slowly migrated to purchasing at Costco. Usually with electrical stuff that swam the Pacific...

Too many products are reviewed by people hired/paid to do that. Or given free products in return for reviews. It's very hard to believe much of anything written about a product. Kind of what other people have said: "Throw the high and the low and read the rest".

Maybe try Trustpilot?
They have a good rep for reviews from actual product users, but it is still the internet, as a caveat.
Mike. Comments are anecdotal or personal opinions, and worth what you paid for them.

This is a problem even with places like Amazon. Clearly products have reviews that are fake and sometimes for a completely different product. All in all though, products with a high volume of reviews means that a lot of people bought it so there is continued demand, and you have a better feel for the average reviews. Products with only a handful of reviews that are all glowing, I'd be leery.
