2010 Ford 6.4L Diesel

Looking at the above vehicle for my new TV. It has 53K miles and has been meticulously maintained in and out. This is a 2 wheel drive extended cab, exactly what I am looking for. I would like to hear opinions on this truck before I go to the trouble and expense of doing the fluid analysis. Is this a truck I can run to 250K miles or should I keep looking? Good news is that the ask is under $23K, so great for my budget. Thanks in advance!

See Spot run! Having never owned a diesel before my knowledge is very limited. Thanks to everyone for all of the info. May try looking at Chevy's.

Not an awesome idea. There's a reason they were only in production for 2.5 years.

I agree, the only way I'd even consider that truck is if I had plans to tune/delete it as soon as I bought it. They can make great power when tuned, but still don't have great longevity.

I had a 2010 F450 King Ranch before I bought the truck in my sig. The chronic radiator leak problems of the 2008-2010 Super Duty’s were most prevalent in the 08’s and 09’s, and pretty much fixed in the 2010’s.

I really liked my truck a lot, but I learned to hate that engine. DPF cleaning (Regen) frequency was erratic and unpredictable. Quite often it would regen as much as every 75 miles, which would kill the fuel mileage, and dilute the oil with fuel. I changed my own oil and always drained at least a quart more oil out than I put in. It never went more than about 200 miles between regens even on its best day.

Unless you’re buying one to delete all the pollution junk off of, I wouldn’t mess with the 6.4. The ask on this truck is too much to be buying for that, because you’ll spend another $10K on it at least.

We had 20 of the 6.4's where I used to work, and the shop hated them, cost a fortune to fix, and stopped using them until the 6.7's came out.

I would simply avoid any diesel brand that's equipped with a DPF and does not have DEF in which the 6.4 falls into this catagory. Poor fuel economy, oil diluted crank cases, soot clogging EGR and turbo's is pretty much the norm for the first generation DPF trucks, unless they are strictly highway runners.

Being only used for about 2 years, I would not. It’s an orphaned engine, not easy to be rebuilt, and is not a fuel miser either. To me there are better choices out there. It may be good and maintained but here at work we have used them exestensively. They don’t hold up as well as the newer 6.7 engines. I think even the older 6.0 were better in some respects. Sorry that’s my take, never owned them just used them here at work. The one your looking at may be good, it it’s up to you. I have heard that parts are expensive on those engines, so something else to consider.
A truck, a camper, a few toys, but most importantly a wonderful family.

The 6.4L was only marginally better than the 6.0L it replaced.

It could be okay, but 53K miles on an 8 year old diesel is a little sketchy. The 6.4L was not a great engine. They were prone to radiator leaks and the DPF exhaust system was problematic. Some of the engines overfueled too much during regen cycles which led to fuel accumulation in the engine oil.

Take a read in this 6.4L article for more info.
