Our government can give freebies to people that never contributed to this country or to illegals,so they can give a discount to those of us who worked hard and served our country.

Just to educate me, can you tell me exactly what federal benefits our government is giving to illegal immigrants?
I've stayed out of this but according to the government Web site the net cost of illegals is between 2 billion and 19 billion dollar's with no way of tracking true cost. You can google this information. GAO Web site.

If it;s the report everyone keeps linking, that was from 1995, (over 20 years ago), which was the last year before the federal prohibition on providing benefits to undocumented immigrants started kicking in. We need a current report. Currently no federal benefits can be paid to undocumented immigrants. There are provisions for spending on things like emergency medical care or emergency food payments, but those are not direct benefits, just emergency spending. [emoticon]

A good friend of mine was electrocuted and permanently disabled while working as a lineman for the power company. I can make a very good case that his service (keeping the power on) is a much greater need than a peacekeeping force in Afghanistan. Does everyone who works for the utility companies deserve special discounts? “

Another vet here.
Incredible that someone can equate working at a 7-11 with military service.
Let me guess how much skin you have in the game.

Thanks for the support. I was beginning to believe that I was the only one that was bothered by this.

jplant4 - Agree with you, lifetime DAV here, bothered so much by that idiotic statement that I was afraid to respond because if I wrote what should be written, probably be banned for life from this forum.

Besides, why should you and I pay less than a hard working family?

This would be a great argument when the social security checks equal that of a hard working family.

I agree! Retirees have limited income. I waited a long time to get my pass when I turned 62, but had to pay the $80, the new rate. Still, that's a great price for a lifetime. I feel that working all our lives, we've earned retirement and the perks that come with it.

If they are going to change it, they should make it retroactive, but not sure if they could keep track.

I agree. Standard policy in this country is if some people truly need a break the government tries to give it to them. When we are older (like us) and can't get the good jobs any more (like me) because this country has let in half of India so that corporate America can hire cheaper programmers, it's our turn to get a break. We earned it and we deserve it.

By the way, somebody here wanted the name of a government program that gives freebies to the illegal aliens. How about the school lunch program? Isn't that federal based? I see them drop off their kids in shiny new pickup trucks at the schools were my legal child attended with no freebie lunch. And that was 10 years ago. Plus if you're on the lunch program Spectrum gives you a huge discount, but not for seniors.

It was such a stupid statement, I didn't think anyone would take it seriously. But you all have my support on that as well fwiw.

Well ... some of you folks may have to think about it a bit to get the connection to this discussion thread, but take some time to read up on and comtemplate what the common cultural characteristics are in the world's Blue Zones.

What the younger folks think of, and how they treat, their elderly in these areas might be an eye opener as to how it relates to a better life for all.
