505 hp / 1085 lbft of torque would come in handy pulling a 20,000 lb toyhauler up a 6% grade.

Exactly. If one is needing a new truck and needs to brag about economy or saving the rainforests or something other than mo' power, I hear Toyota has a nice new pickup!

Gotta love improvements.
Remember when the 1989 Dodge Cummins with 3 speed trans and a whopping 160 Hp/400ft/lbs was the cats meow?

Just used my 1992 to tow our toy hauler to a campground for the weekend. Being in California it does all right and while I see guys towing at 75mph that's just not my style. Also the fact my truck only goes about 70mph helps ??

I've never had it on dyno but she's got 50 horse injectors, HE351 turbo, full 4" exhaust including down pipe and a few other odds and ends.

With the auto manufacturers now committed to electrification powering their vehicles along with the future of half ton truck diesels being questionable, I can't help but wonder if it's time for these medium duty diesel trucks to start focusing on improving fuel economy and even simplify the emissions systems on these trucks.

And a fine pulling engine it is.
But your engine with a 200hp tune is really fun!

Next February I will be out of warranty. If I want more power it will be easy to obtain.

We just had a Kenworth deleted โ€ฆ.. left the power alone as it was the unreliability of the def system that was causing us grief. Another unit was a little short on getty up so we had it deleted along with a serving of 100 hp. Up here the pickups are cheaper to replace than keep which removes much of the incentive out of deleting. Looks like Iโ€™ll have to make do with 475 Hp.

I have driven the grades Marty is talking about in a VW Diesel 5 speed. Nice it had an emergency brake handle between the seats. So steep you would think you were going to roll backwards stopping on those grades.

Spend some time out at elevation where the grades are steep and you might feel different. I would welcome more power than the 350/800 my truck has when pulling through the Rockies.

Your grades on interstates are no steeper than here in Wa St at sealevel. No more than 6%, except short bursts to 8%.

Want to talk local, try 25% grades! Yes you have elevation to deal with. 3% loss per 1000' if you have a non forced induction motor. Figured that out in 91 with a TBI 454 at 14K gcwr, 500 below ratings in yellowstone. Going 15-20 mph up the 10-15% grades in the park. Went back a few days after 9-11 with a 6.5TD, Less HP, but at 16K lbs, puling the SAME trailer. But my four kids were now adult sized teens instead of 6 months to 6 years. Pulled ALL the hills 20 mph faster! 4000 lbs over gcwr!

Reality, i doubt ALL that hp is hitting the pavement in todays motors. THe Auto transmissions need more HP to motovate a 10 sp vs the lder 3 spds. The NV4500 behind my 6.5TD only took 25-30hp vs 40+ for the 88 with the TH400. The original 5 sp Allison took 60-65HP to operate. Yes we are getting more HP to the ground. But also using more HP in drive train loss too.
i would have no issues pulling an RV thru the rockies with my 05 dmax that was a 320/620 in reality. My 185/385 6.5 was a lot better trip than my 235/385 TBI 454.

My measly 385/865 and the too few gears AISIN seems to be just fine towing West Coast at 35-36k combined.
