My permanently mounted ASME tank is under the van on my 1997 Class B Xplorer. I used it 10 days ago just fine. I drove to PA and as I started to turn on the valve I could hear wooshing gas and felt the cold on my hand and the smell. I turned it off right away. I tried again a few times with the same result. The next day it did not make the wooshing sound & I did not feel the cold, but I did smell some gas. So it has stayed off. This happened once before in 2019 when I wanted to check my furnace before driving to FLA in January from Michigan. When I made Tenn it was good and has been good since. I note both times it happened I had been in freezing temps.
I am getting by as I am always plugged in to shore power on my current trip. When I get home I will try to find some company to either replace that valve or the whole tank as it is old and even though I repaint it often it's age is showing.

You may be able to tighten the shaft nut behind the valve handle to compress the seal tighter. Also, the valve should always be fully opened so it back seats against the seal to prevent leaks.

I wouldn't mess with it. I would take it in, have the tank professionally serviced, or replaced with a new one.
Any undetected gas flow there is a potential bomb.
It isn't worth risking your life over.

Attempting to repair this issue yourself isn’t wise IMO.

Sure seems like this would be a logical problem to cause these symptoms. I would tighten the nut on the handle shaft and it should solve the problem.
Also as Dutch said, always open the handle all the way.
Today is my personal best for most consecutive days alive.

This is a common issue. The stem packing that these valves use cannot be tightened, It is a fixed seal. Unfortunately, they get old and do as yours did. The valve is also capable of "top seating". This means that it will "back seat" the valve disk so there is no load on the stem seal at that time. This always makes me nervous when I have to deal with it. It may be near impossible to buy a replacement stem seal for that valve. You will be able to buy a replacement valve from a shop that does things with LP tanks and have them replace it. They may have to dump the tank to do this. Not many have the capability to recover the LP that is in the tank.

Ok.. I'm kind of caviler when it comes to dealing with propane.. I grew up with it, 100 LB bottles.. I've used either propane or natural gas nearly all my life.
I"m trained in a lot of areas that are somewhat related... And studied engineering....
And in this case *I* Would Seek Professional Help.
Odds are you are not going to pay all that much for the pro to fix it and the job will be done right and may well last 10-20-30-40 years or more.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

I tried opening it all the way and closing it, several times. It still is not wooshing but there is a slight smell. So I've not used it and am using a small ceramic heater. It got down to 53 2 nights ago. At least the electric blanket worked well. Last night it was 63, better. 2 more nights to go.
I have made many calls and found a gas place and an RV place that would take a look at it. Hope to take it in next week when I get home. I am not going beyond what I did. I asked all I called about replacing the tank and none would.

Last night I used my brothers electric heater and it was getting too warm with it. I got it set lower and it was a very comfortable night.

Where is the whooshing coming from? If the tank was leaking it would leak all the time.
