A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

Richard, thanks for the link to Joint Strong. Got it today and was rubbing what hair I have left trying to figure how I'm going to get her to eat it. Being the "eat anything girl" she is I sprinkled it over her dry food and Cookie ate it all and licked the bowl. I have a full bottle of the Costco Cosequin DS tablets and thinking about hanging on to them for my Rocky as he is turning 10 years old, 2 years behind Cookie. I'll let you know how she does on the powder. Again, thank you.

I hope it works for you as it has for me and my fur babies.

Richard, thanks for stopping by to say Hi. I have followed this thread from the very beginning and read everyday. I have not and probably will not contribute. For some reason every time I lost something on a message board, I look at it and say to myself, oh no one wants to read this. Still, I feel like I know all the regular posters on this thread and miss them when they take a few days off. God bless you, your family and all who post or just read here.

Good afternoon everyone. I haven't posted in a few days just trying to get my thoughts and self together. Sue has been on the run, going day and night with family, church and other things. I have been dealing with issues with the motorhome again. It is still the same old thing, bedroom slide-out. The seal is leaking air so the compressor recycles off and on now every minute or two. I am determined to go to Waynesboro, Waycross and Blakely, Georgia to see friends and family. If it breaks, well it will just have to break.

I am glad the election is over, enough said about that, no political stuff allowed here on this thread. I am tired, very tired for some reason, just can't seem to get interested in doing anything except staying close to the house.

Our pastor is out of town so I am in charge of prayer meeting tonight. I have been asked to preach at my daughter's church in Blakely Sunday morning of the 20th. Looking forward to that.

I don't know what to say about not being on the thread for a few days except to say I just didn't have anything to say. Is that strange or what???:h Looking back at some of my posts it reminded me of someone stuck in a rut without much to add to anything and I seemed to have a negative attitude which isn't like me at all, I don't think?

Anyway, I am okay, just sorting through some bumps in the road, trying to get a handle on Sue's retirement and the change it is making in our lives. I'll go for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

I agree with you campincandice. Perhaps some one who knows him well and has his phone number could give him a call. So many things could have occurred. His puter could have bit the dust. he is sick of talking ;), Maybe he had to go away suddenly. In any case, a prayer for him , I think would not be amiss.

Tell me, is everyone glad the election is over? I sure am. People were treating others in a very harsh way. I think I am a bit older than most of us, and I have NEVER seen or heard anything like this election. This was down right mean and acrimonious. friends turning on friends and even families divided.

I dd a job this morning that I just hate. I cleaned out my pantry. Last year this time my husband and I were both getting pretty sick. Our daughter came to stay with us and I just turned the household money over to her. I could not drive. I ad a tumor on my pituitary gland that was pressing on my occultary nerve, It caused me to lose a great portion of my vison. No driving. I would up with a lot of things in my pantry that no one who lives here likes to eat. So I cleaned it out and boxed it up and carried it to the Salvation Army. My pantry sure looks neat and uncluttered. I should do that more often .

MetalGator, be patient, when Monty is ready, he will be on that leg. He probably has gotten accustomed to hopping around on 3 legs. I am thinking he is probably going back to see his vet sometime soon and will have another look see. MY two little fur balls are doing great. I have plugged in the heaters in their beds because we are having some chilly evenings. Rockie really likes the heat. I think because he has arthritis. Gracie is not really into laying in hers. She would rather lay on my bed. We keep a chair near the end of our bed and she jumps into the chair and then onto the bed. Well, time to hit the road here. We have taekwando right after school and she has a belt test next week. Cant miss a lesson. You all take care, and God Bless. say a little prayer for Dixie.

Good Morning FOOFs

I hope everyone is doing well. Monty continues to feel better but still can't walk on the leg. It will be 2 weeks tomorrow that he had his surgery. He has really been full of energy the last couple of days and it's going to be more difficult trying to keep him from over doing it.

I hope Richard is doing OK as he's not posted on the thread since 11-3. Hope everything is OK.

The other day, Bud brought me a little orange tabby stuffed animal (toy) as we lost our 19 yr old cat Edna earlier this year. Cutest thing, Darcy went and got one of her favorite toys and laid it in front of the new "kitten." I think she misses Edna.

Yes, my dogs are a little bit spoiled! They haven't learned how to put up their toys yet. Monty will empty that basket to find the right toy and then I have to put all the toys back!

For a while, I thought your pups might be hoarders. I know of several greyhounds who take toys, shoes, and whatever else they can get their mouths on, and pile them up in their beds, crates, or other favorite places.

Monty is a hoarder. He will take several toys, chewies, etc. and will lie on the floor with the toys in front of him. He usually has one toy in his mouth like a pacifier. If the other dogs get near him, he will bark at them. It's pretty funny watching him.
