Any suggestion on where to stay to see the Monarch butterflies. Church's suggests Inn Minarcha as does a birding Guide we know from Patzcuaro. Any guiding services suggested? Should be there around 4 March

Last year we stayed overnight in the parking lot in our 24' rv. We were the first up the hill and was wonderful being alone with the butterflies (we did have our guide).

We visited Patzcuaro on the return from the mountains, traveled more directly on the road to Mexico DF exiting to the south to access roads near the butterflies. We know about the California (State) gatherings of the Mariposas Monarchas, but on this forum, are their other Mexican views on the subject. Yes it gets cold, our young men who directed us on our trip (and skipped school to do so) showed us the thickness of the ice on a barrell of water, about 1/2 inch thick. A trip one never forgets! It's several thousand feet higher, we likely got to over 11,000 feet.

That whole area is beautiful, and now only a couple of hours from us! We can visit anytime.

Ya, Patzcuaro is one of our favorites as well.

Part of our "annual migration" for years.

We also enjoy Ururapan.

We leave the milkweed in the field and the monarch butterflies are here every spring.

Just going to Patzcuaro is tough for us-take a blanket, and LOTS of extra clothes!

But it's still a great place, and we love to visit the area.

Patzcuaro has a lot of gringos running around on both the plaza mayor and the smaller plaza bocanegra.

Ask where the tourism office is. It is a short walk from both plazas.

They will have more information and most importantly, accurate and up to date information about days, hours, prices, etc.

Take clothing for 25F temperatures and moderate humidity. Countless people have suffered on that trip because of the chill, ruining it for them.

For more information about tours that have been taken from Zihuatanejo, Morelia and Patzcuaro, go to zihuatanejo.net, and search their message board. Lots of people from here do it and have suggestions.

We drove our towed car from the RV in Villa Corona, t0 Angangueo, got a hotel room and drove up the road next morning to the staging area, and parking lot. We arranged for a ride up the remaining hill on donkeys, lead by the owner. That remaining distance took 55 minutes with the animal huffing a bit, but nothing like that from our man, although we were probably at 11,000 feet or more where we left our mounts, to walk down to where the monarchas were.

We were a little too early to see a mass flight out,off the trees and into the sunshine, but even though likely the first ones of the day, there, it was a great experience, still lots of butterflies in flight. The walk back up to the animals got us panting for breath, after spending the winter at sea level. On our way back down, we saw old friends from the beach who missed the winter there that year riding up. We stayed another night in town (at only 9,000 feet) before heading back, but stopping for another winter's day, in Patzcuaro. Love that town.
