Advice For 2013 Dodge EGR

SweetLou

I did a search but I can't find my answer so I thought I would ask someone. My Ram is a 2013 6.76 and I want to know your experience in servicing the EGR valve. Truck went in for a recall and he said I was approaching mileage to change it at a tune of $1,200.00. I have no issues with the truck, or lights on etc. I cannot really even find at what mileage I am to do this service. I have changed out my CC filter but this one is throwing me. What is involved in the changing of the unit? Dave Smith says they clean the system @ $649 which is less but is it the right way? Any thoughts please. Also, do we have a DPF on our trucks and do we RE-Gen because I have never seen anything light up for that either if we do.

Maybe check the owners manual?

YUP!!!

Here is mine and will be the same for SweetLou. Read bottom line. 67,500 miles is listed at top of page.

Above I showed the Filter ONLY is required to be changed from 13 up.

Below is my Dad's 2012 manual, notice it specifically said to clean ERG valve and cooler. It also says to replace the CC filter.

Mine is a 2013 and I changed the CCV filter on it when needed, but not the EGR (even though the dealer said it was required). This is what I read on Geno's Garage regarding the EGR cleaning for 2013+ trucks:

Looking closely at their Owner's Manuals reveals that a CCV filter change is also required at 67,500 miles, However, the cleaning of the EGR valve and EGR cooler is not a requirement. We asked the folks at Cummins and they responded that you may wish to include the cleaning, but it is typically not needed until the second crankcase vent filter change. They did suggest an inspection of the EGR valve. "Sooty/dusty is good, shellac/crusty needs to be cleaned." If the valve is shellac/crusty, don't skimp, go ahead and do the entire EGR system cleaning

I personally don't know as I replaced my filter at 60k while doing all my other fluids and filters. Dealer did the reset for me while getting warranty work done. If not i will see it pop up around 67,500 and will let you know what I see!

Probably a notice on the EVIC like you get when you need an oil change. My truck tells me when the oil needs changing but it is not a CEL. All of you guys saying you received a CEL was this the yellow picture of a engine with ( ) around it?

I really have no idea what it's called but you WILL get a message at of near every 67,500 mile interval on a RAM 6.7 Cummins powered truck.

Maybe someone with a 07.5-12 owners manual can post a pic of what it says on the Maintenance schedule.

Is it a CEL or a message in the EVIC?

I got a CEL at 67,500. I believe the manual says to change CCV filter and clean egr system at 67,500. Once I did so the problem was solved. I don't own the Ram anymore so I can't check the manual.

A CEL is set by a fault. If your EGR was stuck yes it could set a CEL. And once cleaned and operational the CEL would go away after a couple drive cycles if not cleared with a reader first. I have not heard of any manufacturer triggering a CEL for maintenance. That is just poor design practice. If your truck requires this maintenance it was just coincidence it failed at that maintenance interval. In fact, that would suggest the required maintenance interval is too long if the part fails before the require service is performed.

Maybe I should check on cleaning mine too. My EGR as well as CCV have been sitting on a shelf just like Shiner's

At least dust them off. 😉
