Bought new brake assemblies thinking the old pads were too thin. Turns out the new ones are about 1/2 the thickness of pickup pads. Why? Now I have a brand new set but don't think I'll need them for another 10 years.

it is probably more likely that the magnetic contact surface will "fail" (ie. wear down) while before the break shoe itself.

I've noticed all trailer brake shoes are thin compared to auto and truck shoes.

I would return them.
You probably have drum brakes (shoes) not disk brakes (pads). But yes new ones can be thinner than older ones.

Another indication of how cheaply they build TT and 5ers to save $10.

You have disc brakes(pads) or drum brakes(shoes)?
