Cummins 6.7 Injector Codes?

mrgrim007

2014 RAM 6.7 - About a month ago I got a P020D code (#4 cylinder, possibly bad injector). Cleared to the code and hasn't come back.

A few days ago, another CEL. P020B, cylinder no. 2, same thing.

Does this mean it's time for injectors? Or do is further diagnosis needed? If it needs injectors, I might tackle them myself. Shop quoted $5,200.

"RACOR" is GOD in the Marine World. The RAM's filtration is VERY high quality if one sticks to MOPAR, FleetGuard and RACOR labels. Injectors in the thousands to replace one would be a fool to try to save a few $$$.

I have not. How is that done?

I’m not sure what the fuel filters are...maybe old/bad/generic fuel filters are the problem?

Racor, Fleetguard and Mopar are most likely the only filter for the rear filter.

Rocar is the one who makes it for Fleetgaurd, Baldwin, Mopar, Napa, and a few more. They are the OE manufacturer. In many cases in the heavy/medium duty world, filter manufacturers will just buy patented or hard-to-make filters from the other filter manufacturers and paint/label them as their own. Happens all the time. Unlike the automotive market that has enough volume to support multiple manufacturers making the same filter and cheapness generally gives way to quality due to the competitiveness of the market.

Contact Blackstone Labs and they will send to you free postage paid sample kits. Mid stream when draining oil is when you capture the sample.

Bottom line run the brands I listed as most others are inferior.

You can take an oil sample and send it to Blackstone (or others) for analysis.
If injectors are leaking at all, there will be raw fuel in the engine oil. If they are leaking bad, the oil level will rise and become very diluted = BAD for the rest of the engine.
Check your oil, if there is a a fair amount of fuel in it, you'll smell it and it will leave a halo effect on a piece of paper, although not a foolproof test.
If you don't even know about your fuel filters, start by learning and make sure you have quality filters. Poor filtration is the most attributable cause of early injector failure.

Get the truck checked out. Balance rates and return rates will pinpoint a bad injector, mechanically. A bad injector solenoid would more likely cause a P020 code.

$5200 is highway robbery. Even with a new set of injectors costing $2500, just doing an injector job (and a complimentary valve lash since you're close to that maint interval and the valve cover is off should be a days work.
I had injectors done on my 07, was 6 hours of shop time. I'd figure a couple more for removing the extra c rap on a 6.7.

I would not shot gun the harness. There is a specific code for an open in the harness or injector.
Your codes refer to an issue with the timing and/or duration of the injection event.

I would check the harness/valve cover gasket first. It all comes as one unit. I have seen screws come loose and chafed wires that cause similar issues.

Thanks - I was wondering if that was the first harness to check. The gasket/harness is ~$180, so I was thinking I could try replacing that first.

How many miles? Lots of people have 150-200K miles on stock injectors with the 6.7. Its possible to have 1 bad one, but 2? Unless you are up there in miles, I would suspect the injectors are fine or you just have bad luck. The fact that something happened to cause #4 injector to throw a code, but it didn't come back makes me think its not the injector, but something else.

I would start by making sure all your wiring harnesses are in good shape and securely fastened. I'm guessing that something is loose in the injector wiring harness that is causing a voltage drop somewhere that is causing the code. The wiring harness is the first place I would look.

At a bare minimum I would say you need further diagnosis. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! I'll see if I can figure out how to look at the wiring harness...

It has 128k miles.
