CD/dvd ROM drive error....fixed see post 4

this is the msg from windows in device manager

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

out of nowhere the built in DVD r/w drive and the external USB drive no longer work

control panel knows they are there, shows them and gives the above error msg in device mgr

explorer and NO programs can access either drive
the USB ports still work for my HHD and memory sticks

i have disabled / enabled un installed, scanned for hardware and changes

and done a system restore (3) times

nothing will fix the problem

i can not read or even see the drives or discs, does not even attempt to read the contents, its like they suddenly dont exist

the only thing i have not tried is a system recovery to new condition
and i really hate to try that
because of the amount of software i have installed and all the files i will need to back up first
i did not install any new software, no idea what could have corrupted the regestry

ok got it working
had to goto recovery and use "REFRESH" not system restore
THIS apparently restored the registry, with the last good backup

FixIt did not help me, its all about install / uninstall programs

i need to delete fix a registry issue dealing with hardware

Both external and internal drives at the same time ?
The external DVD burner drive has been unplugged for a month
I only tried it with a known good DVD after the built in drive failed to register anything be inserted
I will look for Ms fixit

MS has a fixit program that resolvis many hardware problems. Just search for that. That said, it could be a bad drive. I have had that happen to me twice.
