dri z air dehumidifiers

the contents of these is calcium chloride, the same ingredient as ice melt. Has anyone bought ice melt to refill the dri z air? I just bought 60 oz dri z air refill at walmart for $7, but you can buy 50lbs of ice melt at lowes for $30, I think it was. I am not a big fan of dri z air but may be better than nothing and I can't run an electric dehumidifier 24x7.

I tried to use Damp Rid in my DZA's one time and it worked but the granules were much smaller and an awful lot of it fell through the grills of the DZA's.
Not sure if ice melt is as fine but if it is, you may have the same problem.
