WIX oil filter for Onan genny?

Has anyone seen videos or talk about the quality of Onan oil filters? I tried searching who makes them. Also checked youtube for any vids of cutting them open.

I see WIX brand on amazon for the same $10 price. Reviews say its slightly shorter but works. There is also an iFJF brand that is $10 and the pictures actually show the filter taken apart. No sign of cardboard like a cheap fram.

I think WIX might sell a taller filter. Havnt looked up their website yet to search by size. But on amazon i see what looks to be a taller version that cost $17. I would lean more towards changing a decent $10 filter more often than buying a $17 or $20 filter. Running non synthetic Delo diesel oil.

Not against the Onan filter its what i normally buy. I saw WIX as a possible choice and even their standard Wix filter gets high reviews when its cut open and compared.

Here is a link to a Wix 51348 I cut open after 2 years in service on my grandmothers kohler powered riding mower. Still looked great after 2 years!

Not sure if it takes the same filter as yours, but I have a John Deere 318 with an Onan P218 engine. I have used a Wix 51348 and it fits perfect. A wix 51348 can also be had as a Napa 1348, as Napa gold is the same as wix.
Should be about $7 from napa, thats what I pay. May be able to get a better deal during the annual filter sale.
Wix uses a synthetic blend media, so it has good filtering efficiency at 95% @ 20 microns

Either the Onan 122-0836 is unique or the Cummins/onan website has an error in their fleetguard 16165 specs.

Both the WIX and fleetguard are shorter than the Onan 122-0836.

I measured and cut open the Onan.

Thanks for the info. I just bought an Onan 122-0836 instead of the WIX.

Can you by chance direct us to public specs on the Onan filter? Im curious the micron rating.

As an Onan dealer for 30+ yrs, have changed literally thousands of o.f.'s on Onan gennys. For current gas/LP sets, I use the Onan filter.
Have used Wix/Napa, and had couple of instances where filter loosened up and leaked. Overall, I think Wix/Napa is good quality filter, 'tho. Price is about same, so I stay with factory part. For older units, and diesels, use mostly Fleetguard, because , as O.P. stated, they are owned by Cummins,( as is Onan). For diesel air filters, I use some Onan, but mostly Kubota parts, as I have better pricing on these.

Reason is they are no longer Onan. They are Cummins.

I have purchased MANY FleetGuard filters since 2001. Their synthetic StrataPore media is better than most. Recently I have switched to Donaldson Blue that is the re labeled AMZ/OIL Ea filter. Better flow and filtration.

My 6500 Commercial gen says Cummins/Onan

Cummins owns Onan. Cummins owns FleetGuard, they are their filtration division.

MOPAR filters are relabeled FleetGuard for RAM Cummins applications. I will bet the Onan is a FleetGuard.

And it is funny lawnmowers will run years and years and years with (maybe) yearly oil changes with no filter. Go figure.

Thanks for the info on the 122-0833 short and stubby filter.

I searched around last night for the 122-0836 which i believe uses a 3/4-16 thread size. WIX and Donaldson didnt appear to have a close match. WIX has the 57398 but its shorter. My mechanic friend said its a pain to install and recommended sticking with the Onan brand. This is for the genny where the bottom of the filter just barely sticks out the bottom.

Also looked up that iFJF brand. Didnt find much. Their homepage calls it an "online filter" and has the common English spelling errors. Based out of china. Looks like maybe they hooked up with amazon.

Unless someone knows of a video i might cut open my Onan filter. Always wanted to do that.

The WIX 57398 has a micron rating of 32.
The short and stubby 51064 is rated at 21.

Tried looking up the Onan filter and the cummins website says the Onan 122-0836 is the Fleetguard LF16165. But when i look at the LF16165 specs its the same 4.4" height as the WIX 57398, which is shorter than the Onan. I still need to pull the Onan filter off and will measure it myself. For a second i thought maybe the Onan filter is just a fleetguard painted black, but the difference in height suggests thats wrong.

Here is a clip from the Cummins sight regarding the short and stubby Onan filter. Might be useful to some of you.
-------
Cummins Onan RV oil filters feature valves that allow oil to bypass the oil filter during cold starts, or if the filter becomes plugged. Other manufacturers' oil filters often do not have bypass valves. As these "will-fit" filters trap debris, oil pressure starvation can occur, leading to high oil pressures, failed gaskets and even engine damage. Other "will-fit" oil filters do contain bypass valves but they do not determine at what PSI the valve opens. If the setting is too high, the filter's paper element can be damaged during a cold start rendering it useless, or cause oil starvation to the engine.

Customers have comments that the replacement oil filter (part #122-0833) they purchased for their Cummins Onan Quiet Diesels appears to be the wrong size. We hear this a lot! Filter #122-0833 has replaced filter #185-5801 and filter #185-5409. Despite the difference in outward appearance, it will fit your set and the oil ring will provide a proper seal.
