Elon's Starlink Internet Service

Bill_Satellite

The most recent info from the beta testers for the Starlink service.
Hardware costs to be a beta tester $499.
Monthly service $99/month.
No information thus far on end user experience or expectations for the service. Lots of speculation and hopes but few actual experiences. It's also still unknown how many users are using the few satellites currently in orbit (yes, I call less than 100 few) and how additional users or satellites will effect the experience and the cost.
I have great hopes for Starlink. I just don't have any hopes that this will be anything usable by us common folks in the next few years.
Point of interest, however, is that if the service was $99/month and you still had to pay for a streaming service to watch TV you would still be better off with DISH or DirecTV plus a stand alone internet service.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

Direct TV is raising their prices beginning in January 2021 according to latest news. How much I do not know.

And like anything satellite, cloud cover and precipitation will affect reception. But in areas without access alternatives, it's better than nothing, albeit expensive.
The only folks who believe this are the cable company ad-writers.
I've had Dish for 22 years now. Never once had an outage for weather, clouds, snow, or rain. There used to be a 20 minute outage twice a year for solar interference, but that has gone away now.
We had Dish and then DIRECTV and both were regularly affected by thunderstorms etc. Jumped at the chance for a fiber TV/Internet service when it became available and no more signal interruptions.

It didn't start that way. Only one poster caused it to go sideways.

He knows this well. He's just an A$$. He takes pride in it and rolls in the mud just as happy as a pig in shinola. If no one quotes him I won't have to see any more of his drivel.

LOL. Again. Name calling? Hello Pot, meet Mr Kettle.
The only reason Billy and i go at it is that he attacked me on these boards some time back for no reason. I actually thought he was posting while drunk or confusing me with someone (tho i have no knowledge of his drinking habits). If you cant take it, dont dish it out and certainly dont go crying to mommy. I treat people like they have treated me- works both ways.

Heres some more info pertinent to the thread for those that want to learn instead of complain. Always read the comments at this site as they usually have pretty good input on the subject.

edited to add: also pls note that i offered to buy Bill and his partner lunch because i thought he was near me at the time. Turned me down flat saying it would never happen. Some people just want to hang onto the hate, i guess.

This reminds me of the Supranos or God Father or Days of Our Lives that went on forever and forever but it is all good fun. Captain Happy:)

CFerguson is intentionally being offensive. This is not the first time. Unfortunately, it probably won't be the last time. Civility in this society is dying. I actually exchanged PM's with him about it in a prior thread. He said something about "retaliation" and told me he was "glad the police didn't feel like I did." When I responded that I didn't think the police believed in retaliation, he never opened my PM. To tell you the truth, his PM's to me didn't make a whole lot of sense.

Billy, why wont you meet me for lunch if we are close? I'll buy. Bring your partner if you want. Depending on where you are exactly, i probably know the good spots too. I really think ftf helps folks understand each other better. Typing words can never convey the true subtlety/nuances that speech can.

Again, i am completely happy for anyone who likes their current dish, landline, or even bright plaid yellow bell bottoms (well, that last one is a white lie, those things are hideously offensive to my eyes). This is America and Capitalism and the Freedom to Choose! But looking at what Elon has done in such a short period of time(!), what the projected timeline is.....well, i just dont see how the old services can have any future. RIP old guard, you were fun while you lasted. Refusal to see whats coming will get you run over. If i can help you, or anyone, function better and enjoy life more (and save money!!!), then the world is just a little bit better place.

Well....Bill, i sure dont mean to offend you in the least. God Forbid. But maybe you should look again at that post of mine that you quoted and note how i also poked fun at my own self by signing off as 'champy".

Must be nice to have decent cable service. Comcast, our only choice here, is just not good so I use my Mobley plan in a Netgear cell modem to power my home network. I would imagine I would dump Directv and switch to Starlink and stream when the time comes.

Dave

Yes Dave we are both fortunate to have the mobley at $23.00 and change a month. Starlink sounds like may be a great option for Satellite users. The more internet options the better for everyone. I have also found in my travels there are many free wifi locations for news, weather and even movie watching at places such as Starbucks, casinos, major truck stop centers, etc. Our smartphones will smell out these wifi critters.

Would you mind defining "now standard internet wifi"? It never occurred to me there was any such animal. Do you mean a wifi access point to cable Internet access or something else?

Dave

With my spectum internet service I receive tons of free movies using visio TV apps with crackle, filmrise, etc. Also lot of free movies from my Roku (one time fee) device with all their free apps and as Amazon Prime member ($100.00 per year) I watch many free or dirt cheap movies. I also get free IMDB movies with ADs plus free movies on YouTube non paid with and without ads. Some movies on Roku and Visio have Ads

For backup and traveling I have original cheap Mobley plan and device. I don't really need Mobley but keeping it. My spectrum monthly internet bill is $59.00 with free access to nation wide wifi access points if needed. I get most live network news channels from apps on Roku and Visio TV

For a one time fee of $40.00 I have firestick for additional free movies but a lot of this is duplication from the other devices I already have. For phone service I have a very old AT&T prepaid plan that works just fine for me with no data service or charges. Captain Happy
